gold and silver heart wreath with raw silk ribbon hanging down

A minimal DIY Valentine’s Day wreath…that cost zero dollars to make!

This is just a silly little Valentine’s Day project, but I like how easy it is. Inspired by a now sold out brass heart wreath from Terrain, I made a mini Valentine’s Day wreath with items I already had at home. Which means it didn’t cost me any money to make!

I reused foil wrappers from the chocolate coins Hayes got for Christmas. So, if you have any of those leftover, they’re perfect for this. Don’t have any chocolate coin wrappers? Click through to find what other household item you can use for this project.

gold foil being cut into heart shapes for valentine's day

Materials Needed

  • chocolate coin wrappers (like these)
  • gold hoop OR bendable gold wire
  • glue gun
  • scissors
  • ribbon (optional)

If you don’t have chocolate coin wrappers…

You can also use the inside of a tomato paste tube. Pretty much all of them have a gold lining inside, so when you’re done with the tomato paste, cut it open, wash it out, and it’s ready to use.

The neat thing about using tomato paste liners is that you can engrave into the thicker foil to add some texture / hand drawn details.

How to Make a Valentine Wreath

1. Flatten the foil.

Start by flattening out the gold coin wrappers, after the chocolate has been removed. You can use pretty much anything to flatten the thin foil – a rock, the back of a spoon, etc. Just rub it over the surface a few times.

You can also crumble the wrappers up first, before flattening, to give it some added texture, if desired.

2. Cut hearts.

Next, heat up your hot glue gun. And cut the foil into hearts of different sizes.

3. Lay it out.

Once the hearts are cut, lay them out onto a gold hoop to determine the placement.

Don’t have a gold hoop? You can use bendable wire to form a hoop in any size you want. Even a bendable wire hanger would work, if you have one on hand.

4. Glue the hearts on.

Use a glue gun to attach the foil hearts to the hoop.

5. Add ribbon.

Add a ribbon on bow of some kind and it’s ready to hang.

This would be a fun project to do with kids or with a group of friends for a girls night. Easy for any skill level.
